DENVER - In a tear-filled news conference the day after firing Mike Shanahan, Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen gave no timetable for hiring the coach’s replacement.
After going back and forth over the last 24 hours, the Jets can officially forget about even a meeting with former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher. “After reaching out to Coach Cowher’s representatives, we were informed tonight that he is not a candidate for the position,” Jets spokesman Bruce Speight said Tuesday night. There was thought that Cowher had interest in the position, but instead the “talks” never even made their way to having a formal meeting with Cowher, who was also approached by Browns owner Randy Lerner, but he told them he was not interested in their open job.

Apparently the move to fire Mike Shanahan came from left field as some of his players were shocked to say the least when they heard the news.

The NFL’s second longest tenured coach was fired by the Denver Broncos today. Mike Shanahan had been the Broncos coach since 1995. HIs record as the coach in Denver was 146-89.

If you thought the Jets firing Eric Mangini was a surprise , then you better be sitting for this one: The Denver Broncos fired two-time Super Bowl winner Mike Shanahan this afternoon . Shanahan’s Broncos finished 8-8 this season, collapsing down the stretch with four straight defeats. In early December, the team held a four-game lead in the division

The awards have begun to roll in for Falcons QB Matt Ryan, who today was named the AP Offensive Rookie of the Season. He was the third overall pick of the 2008 draft out of Boston College, and helped the Falcons go from a team that was 4-12 to a team that is going to play in the postseason. “I’m certainly flattered,” Ryan said.

In Detroit, they are firing coaches. In Denver, they are running newspaper polls asking fans if the Broncos just completed the worst collapse in sports history.
Denver Broncos will ring in the new year as a battered team with a bruised ego to go with another playoff miss
Because the Cowboys are the Cowboys, the media will claim that their implosion was the biggest choke job of the NFL season .
